Steve Outing describes “The 11 Layers of Citizen Journalism.” In a keynote speech at the World Editors Forum in Seoul, South Korea, in May, Bayosphere creator Dan Gillmor offers ideas on how professional and citizen journalists can coexist. Cheap online tools have given anyone with an Internet connection the chance to start a publication, a Weblog, a chatroom, or a bulletin board. Citizen-generated content is in the vanguard of the latest wave of Web publishers trying to build audiences by delivering local news. Backfence.com, spearheaded by WashingtonPost.com veteran Mark Potts, will launch in 2005 in McLean and Reston, Va. Its goal: neighborhood stories that fly “under the radar” of major dailies. Tech blogger Dan Gillmor has left the San Jose Mercury News to start a citizen media venture. “Something powerful is happening … It’s in the early stages and I have a chance to help figure this out.” |
